Pain in the upper back and neck

Injuries caused by hard impact or accidents
If you have sustained an impact to the neck then you should seek medical advice from a doctor or sports injury specialist immediately. Injuries to the neck can cause paralysis.

Pain in the neck which does not radiate
Have you:

  • Pain in the neck which makes it difficult for you to move your head?

Pain radiating from the neck
Have you:

  • Deep pain in the neck which radiates into the shoulder, arms or fingers?
  • Pain radiating up the neck into the head?
  • Pain in the neck causing dizziness or headaches?

Winged Scapula / Long thoracic nerve damage
Have you:

  • A 'winged' or sticking out scapula or shoulder blade?
  • A scapula that sticks out when pressing against a wall?
  • Difficulty lifting weights?
  • A feeling of pressure on the shoulder blade when sitting in a chair?

Inflammation of muscle attachments in the upper back and neck
Have you:

  • Pain in the upper back during and after exercise especially between the shoulder blades?
  • Pain when you press into the bony bits on the spine?

Tight upper back and neck muscles
Have you:

  • General aching and pain between the shoulder blades and up into the neck?

Scheuermann's disease (roundback)
Have you:

  • Noticed your upper back becoming more rounded?
  • Fatigue and pain in the upper back?
